Best virtual machines program
Hi everybody,
I want to know what's the best virtual machine program to install solaris 10 on. is it VMware, QEMu, Bochs ...etc Thanx for your time |
From what I know VMware supports Linux and Windows only.
Bochs is for emulating a whole box, does not offer virtualization. Qemu can be both emulator and virtualizer, so this is the one You are looking for. Here You can find my simple HOWTO about QEMU, but it is written fro FreeBSD, so You will have to fit it to solaris of course: http://bsdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46399 |

But what is the difference between Emulation and Virtualization? |
With emulation You create whole virtual PC, with virtual CPU/MEM/GFX virtual CPU registers, for exaple virtual 32 procesors etc.
Virtualization passes all calculations directly to Your native/real CPU without any emulation. That is why You can emulate PowerPC or Sparc BOX on x86 PC but You cannot virtualiaze PowerPC or Sparc BOX on x86. The main diffrence is speed. QEMU in virtualization on 1.6GHz CPU is about 1.3GHz fast. with emulation it is about Pentium 75 speed on the same 1.6GHz CPU. |
BrandZ allows virtualizing Solaris on Solaris, and with some conditions, Linux on Solaris, with no noticeable speed penalty.
