advise on solaris computers browsing the web as normal users

well excuse me if i am stupid or newbie or whatever you might call it :

We (where i work) have two machines running sun solaris as a sismologic server (?) , basically no one touches them machine unless there is some important data they want to send .
Some time ago i tried some unix commands and it worked like a normal linux machine to me , i remember when the worm32 virus was on and every computer got infected, i allowed my coworkers (even my boss) to browse the web through the sun solaris terminals , but right after that i was forbidden to even touch them , because people would just come and check emails and stuff like that .
We have two other wondows machines connected to the system and they can get connected but thatīs it if you want to get online you usually canīt cause there is always someone on .

Questions :

- How dangerous is it to browse normally through these solaris computers ? (as normal users of course)
- Why there are some sites hot java refuses to open ?

thanks for your time and replys

Shouldn't be any danger in browsing the web as a user. Many do this that use Solaris only.

Not sure about the Java. Any particular errors, etc? Maybe not recognizing the code or whatever. I suck and stay away from Java enabled sites and apps most of the time.

Thanks!

I canīt remember exactly about the errors but i will look into it . Itīs really a shame that my boss wonīt let people use those two machines itīs such a waste , cause they pay US$800/month to have this connection and they just donīt take any advantage from it , they keep telling me itīs a cooperation agreement and that they pay for everything .

so long

Also, DO NOT browse the web as user root.

Solaris can be used to surf the internet just like any other OS with a browser. The issue with these particular machines seems to be more one of policy than a technical issue. If these are production servers, then I can definitely understand the policy to not allow them for personal desktop use. Those resources might be need to efficient server operation.

opera is available for solaris if you're looking for a decent browser.
