xfce does not start

Hello,

I decided to try xfce because of the restricted amount of memory on this machine (64 MB), was this a bad choice? (It is a LAMP machine so it has Apache and MySQL and FTP servers running) xfce does not run. When I try to start it using xfdesktop in the /usr/bin directory, it says Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Is this the proper way to start xfce?
I installed everything, instead of picking through the install list to eliminate things I will never need (in an effort to cut down on overhead) just to make sure I did not miss any required components. Therefore, there should be no missing dependencies.

Can you help me with this? Please?

Smile That works

Thanks for that, It works, albeit at a lower resolution than the character based screen that I started it from.
I am not overly concerned about that however.

I think this is a good choice. KDE is very nice but uses a lot
of resources. If you want to cut down on the footprint, pkgtool
is a very good way to install and remove packages in Slackware

Some Docs:
$man 8 pkgtool | less

SEE ALSO:
makepkg(8), explodepkg(8), installpkg(8), removepkg(8), upgradepkg(8)

But depending on what you're going to do, KDevlop (KDE) has some very
nice html & php devel tools. Quanta+ alone is worth the overhead if you
are going to do markup or script etc.

But please have some fun with it. Along with the slack there's some
joy in the distro.
