Which group should i add my user to ?

Hi.

I've just made a fresh installation of slackware 14.

Till now, i used to add my user to several groups as described here or here.

Now, when i created my user account, i only add myself to video and audio (for trying).

I'm surprised to be still able to, in desktop env, mount devices (i'm not member of plugdev), shutdown computer (i'm not member of power), manage network with NetworkManager (i'm not member of netdev), ...

I will do more tests in cli, but i wonder if there is a doc that explain the usage of each groups ?

Thanks.

Hi,

When using 'adduser' and the query to add the user to 'users' , when you select that then a line prompts you for additional user groups(note that the up-arrow for suggested groups). This will provide suggested groups;
Quote:

users lp floppy audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev scanner
This line can be edited. Press <Enter> if you wish the user to be added to these groups.

Do a "grep CONSOLE_GROUPS /etc/login.defs" to find out of which additional groups your account will be a member for the duration of a console login session (runlevel 3). Note that this does not apply to runlevel 4 (graphical login) which is why it is still advisable to add your account to these additional groups explicitly (unless of course you are never going to use runlevel 4).
