Weird network issues with new Slackware install

Hello everyone I am new to Slackware but not new to Linux. I just installed Slackware for the first time and I am having a weird network issue.I need pppoe to connect to the internet I had it on backtrack Linux and Gentoo Linux. If I setup my network during the Slackware install I cannot connect even with pppoe setup . I can only get a network connection if I skip the network setup process. If I try to set up the network the only way I can connected again is to reinstall the entire OS.I need a static ip for ssh and would like to change the host-name of my box.If I run ifconfig eth0 it shows I have an IPV6 Ip address, I don't know if this has anything to do with it or not.I very much prefer to have an IPV4 address.I find this strange because I never had any problems with pppoe on any other distro's or have i ever used an IPV6 address before, but I am new to Slackware.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot.

Hi, welcome to LQ

I can't help you that much as I never used ppoe.

To have a broad understanding about how network is usually configured in Slackware you could read this article written by Eric Hemeleers aka AlienBOB, one of Slackware's main contributors.

AFAIK the netconfig script (which is called during setup at time of install) is only useful to configure ethernet interfaces.

To avoid IPV6 address you can edit /etc/lilo.conf's entry for the kernel you use and add a line with:
append = "ipv6.disable=1", then run lilo.

To change your machine's name edit /etc/HOSTNAME. See also the files /etc/host*

As stated in aforementioned article you can use wicd as well.
