hi
when i'm trying to boot
i got
kernel panic - not syncing: VFS :Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
i'm installing from DVD
i did
hugesmp.s root=/dev/hda1 rdinit= ro
but still not working either .

It would help to have a bit more information on what you did.
I mean, are you just trying to install and then load a kernel to launch the installation process, did you try to compile your own kernel?
Putting your hardware configuration might also help a bit.

Did you read the Slackware 12.0 CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT, UPGRADE.TXT and RELEASE_NOTES?

If so use the generic-smp as PV states. When the install cd1 boots, just press enter/return.

Hi,

The referenced txt is what PV uses to convey what should be done. You should really read it for installation or upgrade.

Anyway if you are installing the distribution, you should not need at all to tell him where the root partition is, it is even likely what causes the kernel panic.

still cant fix it.
when i try hugesmps. root=/dev/hda2
it load SUSE.which installed before
my hard disk have no grup
i did format and partion but still not working
also. i tried to install slackware 10 then boot slackware 12 but also not working.
i made format again and install suse and tried to install slackware , but the same problem.
i tried to boot : genreic.s but its say Could not find kernel image:generic.s
also i burn dvd again nero just to make sure the dvd is fine and complete .
i don't know if i must install grup before i can boot or make initrd, but if this is the problem
how i can do it , if i can't boot the dvd ?

Why can't you boot the DVD? The install process is really simple. I've just saw this guide, maybe it can help you, it's a step by step on how to install Slackware plus some other software installation: http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfec...op_slackware12

If that doesn't work, maybe you can try to give us a better explanation of what you're trying to do, and how. Because you won't be able to run the setup booting with another root= partition. Just press enter, if you read the instructions on screen after booting with the DVD (before the boot: line) you'll see that's all explained there.

i m trying to install slackware 12 from DVD
when it come to installaion welcome screen
i just hit enter
then its boot hugesmp.s

i tried speakup.s , huge.s but nothing worked with me.
i tried to :hugesmp.s root=/dev/hda2 rdinit= ro
so , its load suse which installed already in /dev/hda2
so i made format to /dev/hda and make partions again
tried to boot the DVD again but the same error .

I have the same problem: I have read all the documentation suggested, but there is no clue in that; I have also looked at the link 2 messages ago.

When booting from the DVD I get to the first screen on the suggested link, press 'Enter' and it's at this point it loads a bit and then hangs! The last line on the screen is:

ACPI: PCI Root Bridge [PCI0] (0000:00)

The server is now completely frozen, there's no Caps or Num Lock working and I can't even switch off the Server at the Power Switch, I have to pull the power lead out.

Any ideas?

This is a New HP Server with completely empty HDD's.

Slack 11.0 will load fine!

I think this problem is down to the machine and not the distro, as I have just taken the DVD and done a complete installation on an older machine. It's my guess that there's either a piece of hardware or something in the BIOS that is causing Slackware to fail. Has anyone got any ideas where I should be looking, or is there any way that I can get to some sort of log that might point me in the right direction as to what is happening?

The server has an Intel Core2 Duo processor - is anybody aware if this might be the problem?

d_d: I'd suggest to check the medium (either the CD to see if it's corrupted or the CD-ROM card). The setup filesystem is inside a initrd.img included in the CD-ROM, maybe it's corrupted and that's why it's not finding it.

Chris.Marsh: Try passing noacpi option on boot. Maybe that can avoid some ACPI problem you may be facing. I remember reading some hangs when booting related to it, you may want to try "googleing" a little bit.

i did check the DVD again and again , already burn 3 new dvd !?
also checked the DVDROM, its work fine, i can install slackware 10 & 11 - suse - windows every thing expet slackware 12
slackware 11 was installed fine before format. booting fine , no any problem with that.
i was thinking to install slackware 11 then upgrade it to 12 , but i lost the slackware 11 dvd .

i just wana thank every one helped me or tried to help.
the problem that take 3 months from me , was just in the DVD
maybe because i used nero , just used k3b and now its booting fine and worked very good
