to install/upgrade in Slacware use the following steps:

1) download whatever packages you want (like X) from wherever you want

2) cd to where you downloaded the packages

3) if you downloaded the binaries then run pkgtool *.tgz to install
else you can compile the package for your machine

4) start your program (x) and enjoy!

to download the packages from console, discover the wonderful world of lynx. It is a text based web browser, kind of fun to play with. Or if you have the full web address of the package you can use wget to download them.

If you downloaded and installed slapt-get (installed using the command installpkg slapt-getxxx.tgz (that xxx is just whatever is actually there in the filename)as root of course). Then as root type slapt-get -update then you can use it to install what you want.

thanks all! I am trying to learn as much as I can, and one thing I've been wanting to do is upgrade KDE to it's newest version w/out errors! :D
