I have a problem similar to that posted by kg6hno. Yesterday I upgraded my Sony Vaio notebook to 12.1 and the touchpad no longer works in neither the console nor when X is started. I use Xfce as the desktop/window manager.
I read through the CHANGES_AND_HINTS file but saw nothing applicable. Reading the gpm man page suggested changes to xorg.conf and rc.gpm. I tried those without fixing the problem.
I re-installed gpm and reverted /etc/xorg.conf to the original protocol and driver. Touch pad still doesn't work. However, when I plug in a USB mouse, the cursor works on the console, but still not when the X server is running.
