After considerable anguish, I managed to upgrade from 9.1 to 10.1. I have noticed that Kmail can no longer send mail (using SMTP), although receive is fine (POP). Has anybody else experienced this? Is there a Kmail log/diagnostic file I can look at to dig deeper. Clearly this is a non-trivial functionality loss. The message is vague. Quite simply, he "could not connect to host" (being mail.optonline.net).
In answer to the inevitable question, no, I did not change anything (apart from the entire OS<g>.
I have now answered an earlier question I posed:
"Aren't we bringing in a new copy of the kernel (say, bare.i), when upgrading? In which case wouldn't it have to be reconfigured to contain the same parms and modules as the one we currently have in place?"
And the answer is yes, you must re-compile to get the settings you once had, before the upgrade, and I am struggling with this now, .
Finally (yes!). what is the most "popular" font setting for konsole in kde? My settings were change in upgrade, I'd' like to get back what I had, but I have no record of what they were. Industry standard is fine...if there is such a convention.
Thanks to all who have helped me through my many upgrade questions.
George
As mentioned in prior post, I found that Slackware upgrade required recompilation of kernel and/or modules. I walked through all the parms (make menuconfig), but have blundered somewhere. I probably just have one wrong parm, somewhere, causing boot to fail. I am hoping somebody here has encountered this error...It's no fun re-visiting all the kernel parms....
So, on booting the recompiled kernel:
kmod: failed to exec sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-3, errno=2
VFS: Cannot open root device "306" or 03:06
Pls append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:06
I believe major 3 is first IDE disk (hda) and minor 6 is the partition, being/dev/hda6 which is the device with LINUX on it i.e. "root".
Have I screwed up something key in menuconfig? Is this an easy one to find?
Many thanks
George
In addition to losing Kmail SMTP send after upgrade to 10.1, I have lost one more thing, which I cannot explain:loss of printing to CUPS printer, again, which has always worked:
"Printer State: stopped, accepting jobs.
"Unable to open USB device "usb:/dev/usb/lp0": No such device"
Device URI: usb:/dev/usb/lp0"
I am sure that others who have upgraded must have encountered these issues, and I would be grateful for any assistance.
Thanks
George

Pls ignore post 17 and 18...I had omitted certain of the (thousands of) menuconfig parms during kernel re-compile. I think this is called a CUE (Certain User Error) <g>.
OTOH, I have lost SMTP Send capability from KMail after Slack upgrade to 10.1.
Any pointers very greatly appreciated.
Thanks
George
