I spent a good deal of time writing this. I'm still fairly new to Slackware, please send all errors, comments, additions, questions to eric@enode.org. I've created this guide, as I know there are many people out there who want to have a stable Linux server but have no clue how to set things up. I've created this with knowledge I've learned from guides, tutorials, personal experience, and forums. I would like to give a big thanks to www.linuxquestions.org, as they are an extremely helpful source for Linux questions/problems. Thank you for reading. I hope it helps. -Eric Barch

I'm thinking this would have been better as a Linuxquestion Tutorial than posted in the "questions" forum.

Never-the-less, good job!

I joined LQ simply to find this out! I did a quick scan and it all looks understandable. I have one problem being a linux newbie; I don't know what packages to install and not install during the initial os installation to maximize free space. Can anyone throw me a bone on this one?

What exactly do you want your machine to do? You'll have to be as specific as possible as some packages arent' crucial to a working system, but are dependancies on another package.

The only things I want it to do is be a http/ftp server including all the features listed in the original post. No e-mail or anything of personal use. I want it for remote access from my main computer on my network. Hmm. I think that's all the details needed to know.

On my servers I just install all the packages except Gnome, KDE, etc... As long as you have a big enough hard drive go ahead and do a full install, it's not very big, something like 2-3GB I believe.

I'm working with a 1.7gb harddrive. After the install I then still need to use it as a server. :p

Heh, that definetly makes things hard...I've got an 80GB hard drive.

A few revisions made to the guide. Should make things work better. -Eric

Any ideas of why I continue to get this error message? Here is the command I entered.
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -p -u root password 'new-password'

connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)'
