If you hold shift while you press page up you can scroll the terminal up and see what those errors say. In order to get a clue at what is causing the problem these errors should be read. Also which desktop enviroment are you trying to start and which others do you have installed? If you have other window managers/enviroments installed you can use the command "xwmconfig" to chose a different GUI. If you choose a different one and it starts fine with the "startx" command then you know the problem is only with the GUI not X.

Unfortunately, I'm not in front of that computer, so I will have to get the error info later. However, I did use the xwmconfig command to change different GUIs and the error still occurred. By the way, gnome is not installed. I just used the KDE with all those variations.

It has been my experience that when a no screens found error is encountered usually one of the parameters in the X configuration file is incorrect or no display or screen is defined. Usually it is an error in the configuration. Make sure you have all of your monitors information such as the correct vertical and horizontal sync range, maximum resolution, video card memory, video card type, video card model etc. Once you have this information try running xf86config and answer the questions. This will create a new configuration file with the new input and probably resolve your issue.

video card info

My video card only says Permedia 2 on it. I bought if from someone so I don't have the manufacturers info on it. If I use generic info from another company will that will just as well?

A quick Google search brought up plenty of hits for the Permedia 2, and it looks like it's supported in Linux, at least for 2D work. As javpra suggests, log in as root and run xf86config, follow the prompts and you should be good to go.

I got it to work!!!
I realized that the XFree log had some of the info already in it.
I also used this old dos program to get info from my video card, but it wasn't as informative as the XFree log.
Then I realized (after the fact) that the video card info was detailed on the win98 part of this computer (I have it dual booting).
So I ran the Xf86config and answered the questions as low level as possible and it worked.
Once I was able to run startx KDE, I saw that I could also run Xf86config from within the GUI (easier to understand).
My only situation is that the desktop is larger than the screen so the menus open up big. I figure if I mess with the screen dimension setting, I'll get it figured out at some point.
Thanks again
