Source Install ?'s

Well, its a bit odd that when I come to post a "specific" question concerning installs a new sub forum has been created. Thanks LQ.org!

Anyway, first of all, this may be lack of knowleadge, or moving onto unquestioned areas, but, I've noticed that the Slackbuild scripts work so much better than the packages. It seems to have Perfect setups after a few tweakings inside the actual .build script.
1) Do the scripts that are provided, make for better, closer to perfect installs? And why do they work so much better than the install directions on most packages? It seems that XFree86 is now running Xft and Freetype2 properly after using the "tweaked" build script. I followed LFS XFree86 install instructions before, but never got Xft to work.

2) I dont have the source cd iso, so I was wondering if I were to obtain the cd, could I replace cd1 with that cd during the initial install and build Slack from the source cd?

Thanks.. Kipp

Could you go alittle more indept with the tweaking of the build scripts or point me to a source on this subject? I have installed Slack several times and everytime there were about 10 or so packages that returned an error when installing (important packages to like kernerl headers, gcc and so forth).

What version of Slack were you trying to install when you got the errors? Where did you get it from? I had great difficulties trying to install Slackware 9.0 and Slackware 9.1 off of the Linux Format Coverdisks (DVD). I never got 9.0 working with that one, I ended up using another copy from the PCPLUS cover disks.

With 9.1 I used this script from Linux Format: http://www.bothwick.org.uk/lxf/slackfix.tar.gz
to burn CD-R copies, and used them to install.

Cheers

I was trying to install 9.1. The errors were mainly on the first cd with the kernel headers. Also after the kernel source was installed it would then skip to the second cd and not install system libraries, networking and so forth. I would have to go back and install those packages separately. I am going to try out the script you referred me to and I'll get back to ya if I have anymore problems.

Slackware 9.1 from the Linux Format Coverdisk CD works fine, maybe you should try Linux Format for help on the DVD ?

I did, but they claimed it must be my DVD drive, which works with all other DVDs and CDs, except for 3 out of the last 12 Linux Format DVDs, burning the ISOs to CD worked fine though.
