Sound problem in 9.1 - Driver ALSA

well, since my notebook won't play a sound with kernel 2.4. 22 i decided to update it to the 2.6.6, this kernel has the built-in Alsa.. now i'd like to configure that alsa driver, because when X start it doens't find any audio device... if i bash alsamixer i got no such file or directory error, i googled and find this :

I get "no such file or directory" errors from all alsa-utils?. What's wrong?

If you are sure you have ALSA installed and all necessary modules loaded into the kernel, then one reason could be a version mismatch. Especially version mismatches across major version numbers [like 0.9.7 -> 1.0.2] are bad.

If you're running a 2.6.x series kernel with ALSA compilied into the kernel, you might try running the MAKEDEV.snd script found in the scripts/ directory of your Linux source tree. If the /dev/snd directory is not present, this script will build and populate it with the appropriate devices, which very well might fix your problem. Note: this script must be run as root.

where i can find that script? it will configure my sound device??
any other suggestion?

have youb gotten the latest alsa-utils and alsa-libs installed? Get them from www.slackware.com, my kernel compiled in alsa driver works fine.

sorry my friend, i don't know anything about scripts, the 3 or 2 tgz are the key things to get my sound working. FYI, my kernel has the alsa driver built in, so i don't use alsa-driver.tgz

Try, as root, running 'alsaconf'. There is also a man page for alsaconf. I think it will run the script to create the sound devices for you as well as add the necessary entries to /etc/modules.conf or /etc/modprobe.conf for you.

Hope this helps.

well i discovered that my kernel (2.6.6) has alsa built in... but i need to use MAKEDEV to create the sound module.. but MAKEDEV snd won't work.... i really don't know what to do.. i've recompiled the kernel checking all the menu voices regarding ALSA...

I don't know about this makedev thing, but i've also just made a new kernel 2.6.6 with alsa-sound. Just make sure you has the soundcard support and the alsa options as modules (important) in the config file. Then make && make modules_install, and you have your modules created.
Then just run alsaconf as neoslak wrote, and it should work.
