sound not working

hi there,

I am running slackware 10 on an IBM Thinkpad T23, Pentium III. Just started so slack and so a newbie to it.

Got the eternet card, X and the cdrom drive working. But the sound just will not work. I ran alsaconf as root, and it correctly detected intel8x0. Everything went smoothly. But no sound! I raised the volume using trhe mixer provided in Gnome....nothing.

here is my dmesg:

$ dmesg

mixer

The gnome mixer has nothing to do with the alsa config...

First did you run alsamixer? (as root in console) or amixer

You have to un-mute sound channels... and save... (alsactl store)

then try running xwin

let me know if you did that before we proceed to more troubleshooting...

I am having the same problem. I have tried what was suggested in the previous post, and still have no sound.

how is alsa loaded? by module i would hope...

if not and even if so, you probably need to re-compile your kernel. Sounds like you probably just don't have things loading right. (in other words the kernel isn't compiled either for your particuiar sound type (alsa) or something else is wrong in the kernel..)
try re-compiling.. pleny of howto's on how to do it.. it isn't really hard at all..even for a newbie.. and if nothing else you gotta do it sometime...

BTW:
The best way I have found to get someone new to Slackware working with ALSA without too much difficulties is by downloading the ASLA Slackware Packages from one of the Slack Package mirrors (current or v10) and then using a program like 'swaret' or simply pkgtools (eg: upgradepkg or installpkg or removepkg) and do a clean install of newest ALSA packages. Then after you do that simply recompile your kernel...(with the proper sound modules picked under ALSA -> e.g. whatever sound card you have..etc), and WaaLaa! Presto! ALSA will work perfectly after you run:

alsaconf
alsamixer
alsactl store
^ (From console as root)
(then you could reboot to make sure settings get restored...(may have to make sure your rc.alsa file under rc.d (/etc/rc.d/rc.alsa) is getting loaded via rc.M. (I know this sounds complicated.. it's not though.)

Do this and anyone ?should? be fine. (*Evil Grin*) No really.. it should work for you this way.. trust me!

Hi

I also have no sound and I just now tried what you said
alsaconf
alsamixer
alsactl store

and then I could play sounds using the "play" command from the console, but when I turned on the sound in gnome (configure gnome sound), I got lots of beeps and bells which took an age to stop and seemed to take over my pc, cos everything else ground to a halt until the noises stopped.
Am I missing something obvious?

alsactl store

and then I could play sounds using the "play" command from the console, but when I turned on the sound in gnome (configure gnome sound), I got lots of beeps and bells which took an age to stop and seemed to take over my pc, cos everything else ground to a halt until the noises stopped.
Am I missing something obvious?
There could be many answers. I assume you have recompiled your kernel and turned off the OSS-half of sound?

And BTW I don't run Gnome I run KDE and have never encountered this problem, but that doesn't mean it isn't something someone else has expereienced...

And have you re-installed all newest ALSA packages as described, already, above??
(make sure you either do an upgrade or remove/(re)install.)

Let me know...
