Slackware won't boot
 

I have successfully installed slackware 11.0 and when I reboot I get the Grub loader from my Xubuntu setup before and it comes up with a message saying "error 17", followed by a blinking cursor.

What is going on here? I had no problems installing LILO, and I can't even type anything.

im a bit confused. if you have grub there is no need to install lilo.

did you install lilo but you still see the grub bootloader?


if you're really using grub
error17 means grub cant find/recognize the partition you are trying to boot to.

where is you /boot partition? you likely have not pointed to the correct root=/dev/hdX (x=slack / partition) you can edit grub boot lines and modify the /dev/hdX until you get it right.

the other thing to check (I have no idea about ubuntu) is that they include stage1 filesystem support in the grub stages that you are using for the slack partition. else grub will be confused.

if you're really using lilo... from Ubuntu edit your /boot/lilo.conf file to correctly address the slackware root partition.

-if you have sata is 'sdX'
-it'd be helpful to have a more complete description of the system:
where is slack root
where is boot partition
your menu.lst or lilo.conf file

Either install lilo to MBR or configure GRUB (from xubuntu) to boot slackware (the menu.lst)

Nevermind I got it working. I did the simple install for Lilo and it wasn't installing it properly, so the advanced install did it.

BTW, what are some of the most useful packages? Since I did a minimal install...

useful for what?

I pretty much install most of CD1, and only the stuff in CD1/tcl, plus the CD1/kde/qt* packages.

IMO the best way to install is to use the newbie mode.. install only the _bare_ minimums you think you need, and then see whats broken :D

oh, and then fix it of course...
