Slackware Install 12.2 Dell Mini 12

So has anyone had any luck installing on a Dell Mini 12 netbook yet?

I can't get it to see the hard drive when I boot from the CD and try to partition it with either cfdisk (says no disks found) or with fdisk I have tried fdisk -l and it lists nothing. Trying fdisk /dev/sda yields no results either.

I know some people have gotten it installed on the Dell Mini 9 ok but I am pretty sure that is either a sata drive or ssd.

Any help would be great.

Which kernel are you attempting to boot with?

Which drive do you have on the mini?

Are there any options in the BIOS that will let you change the SATA controller mode ? Try changing it to AHCI or PATA/IDE if you can.

Try the probe command. You could also run setup and see if it detects the drive.

The drive is the 80 gig pata drive. The hard drive is a samsung hs082hb-pm

I checked the bios and there are not options for changing the controller mode. I just updated to the bios to A04 and looked that did not add the option either.

The kernel is 2.6.27.7

try doing http install and see if it loads more drivers then back out and see if you can then run fdisk. if not try a live distro that loads and initrd.img for drivers like Ubuntu Linux version 8.04.1 that is the distro that can come preloaded with it.
do not forget in slackware the ide pata drive is hda not sda

I had a similar problem with a toshiba netbook with slack 12.1.
Try booting with:

hugesmp.s acpi=off

I later found a couple of other options that made it work, but I've left my 'book of spells' at work.

Let us know if the above works and i'll post them tomorrow.

Hmm, if so then other possible "magic" includes:
noapic
noioapic
nolapic
nomsi
hda=noprobe

Thanks guys I will give those a shot at let you know.

As for the HTML install I am guessing I need to download a disk image other than the iso dvd image.

I tried getting setup to find the drive but that didn't work.

I will try the attributes at boot tonight.

Ok, exact same issue on the new Acer Aspire 11.1. Disk is IDE HDD: Toshiba KM1655GSX-(PM)
See this thread where I was pointed here. Maybe start with the armedslack distro?

If you are trying to install slackware on your Dell mini laptop and after you boot with the install disk you can't see your hard drive you may need to load the pata_sch module. (This worked for me.)

# mkdir /mnt/cdrom
# mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom

# installpkg /mnt/cdrom/slackware/a/kernel-modules-smp-2.6.29.6_smp-i686-2.txz

# modprobe pata_sch

# fdisk -l

You should see your hard drive now.

Partition your drive and then type "setup" to start the install as normal.

I can get ubuntu, CentOS, and Fedora to see the device as /dev/sda. One thing I have found on the Acer 11.6 is that you cannot delete the first partition on the disk, or you have just made a brick ;-[ Leave the first 100+ MB partition alone, and you can do multiple installs of various os flavors. Slack is the only one I have issues with [darn it!]
