slackware-current dvd hangs during install (configuring your installation, fc-cache)
 

I've used alien's script to download & burn a slackware-current dvd. ISO MD5 check ok, k3b verify written dvd ok but the installation hangs after installing the packages. I've tried installing 3x, it always hangs (non-responsive keyboard) during "configuring your pc/installation".

Is there another way to install via usb thumbdrive and use a locally mounted iso for the packages? I've mounted the iso locally during the installation and specified the path, the installer can't seem to accept it.

Slackbook doesn't describe the part about locally mounted iso.

Problem remains with usb thumbdrive install!
 

PC hangs during "Please wait while configuring your new installation" and/or "mkfontscale, mkfontdir, fc-cache". I've tried installing another 2 times.

I've successfully installed -current in Virtualbox using the same .iso, so it can't be the dvd image that's giving issues.

Loaded the usbboot.img into a thumbdrive and installed base packages only, still it hangs during the configuration stage.

What's going on with -current? Did anyone else experience the same issue?

Is this the right forum for slackware-current issues?

I've just installed slacware64-current without problems, on the same partition. So the issue applies to slackware-current only. Both dvds updated today using alien's script.

For those interested, I've attached the output of dmesg, cpuinfo & lspci.

I'm using Intel Core 2 E2160, Gigabyte P35-DS3L, 8GB memory, 3 SATA hdds, 1 JMicron Sata card, 1 C-media sound card, 1 nvidia 9500 512MB.

Will stay off slackware-current for now.

What about passing the parameter 'noapic' and 'noapci' to the kernel for your '-current x86' to see if you can get a install.

It happens to me too, on an Acer Aspire :(

this is with final 13.0 32 bit.

Maybe resolved isn't the right word, but I tried the 32 bit cersion of Slack 13 on a 32-bit cpu-equipped laptop and everything was fine (actually it was the very same dvd that didn't work before).

I suspect that this only happens when the 32 bit version is installed on a 64 bit cpu.

I have no idea what is wrong with the -current isos on 64-bit cpus. Hopefully someone can figure out why.

Downloading slackware 13 x86 now using torrents. Boy, it's slow.

Slackware 13 x86 Installation Freezes During Font-Cache Generation!
 

I've been trying to install Slackware 13 x86, regretfully every time the installer finishes installing the packages and goes past the "preparing you're Linux for first use" stage, it starts the font caching script. this is where the computer freezes. the cursor on-screen keeps blinking for hours without moving on....:cry:

the installation went fine when i installed it in ~Virtual Box.
i have a P45 motherboard with core2duo e6300 and 4GB of ram. Video card - nvidia 9600GT.

i even tried parameter 'noapic' and 'noapci' without any fruitful results.

You did check the md5sum for the download and burn of the ISO image?

+I did check the md5 checksum before burning the iso. the problem is not with the dvd because i already used it in my friends comp.

and yes i did do a full install. and the dvd media is fine.

I have successfully installed the Slackware 13.0 32-bit DVD distribution on my computer. Like the others above, I found that it hung on the fc-cache screen; however, it is not the font script which is crashing it, but a later script. To install you can run "setup" and the first time it goes onto the configuaration part automatically, and then crashes. Then reboot your computer (which for me required holding the power button in for 5 seconds). After rebooting the slackware installer medium, do "mount /dev/[your target partition here] /mnt", and then do "chmod -x /mnt/var/log/install/setup.80.makebootdisk" - this is the script which is crashing the computer, which is supposed to ask you if you want to make a USB boot disk. Re-run "setup" and go straight to the "Configure" option (or if that doesn't work, you can do a simple "A series" install to get through the installer quicker.)

I don't know if there will be other problems with running a 32-bit distribution on a 64-bit processor - I only got the 32-bit one because I didn't realise I had a 64-bit processor.
