Slackware 8.1 X11 keyboard issue

hello, I have been having some troubles with cedils other chars that aren't available by the default installation. I've been doing some search and I couldn't find anything relevant about this.
Some of my keys don't work properly, e.g.: Že Ža `a`e - see what I mean?
I think that this problem has been around for quite some time. Could anyone give directions to solve this?

1. What files do I need to edit?
2. Is ``xmodmap'' relevant for this problem?
3. If ``xmodmap'' is indeed relevant which keycodes (integer) do
I need to use to configure the keys?

Thanks in advance for any help that you may give.

What keyboard do you use? And what language are the chars you want?
