My hardware is:

Z77 Asrock Extreme 4 board with the latest uefi firmware (2.90).

When booting into uefi mode from the official Slackware64 dvd it takes around 2 minutes for the grub boot menu to appear. This can give the appearance of a freeze to those expecting grub to respond quickly.

I let it set for about ten minutes. Im going to try and let it set longer this time to see if it is just crappy grub. LiLo kicks butt!!!

Did you disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Boot in your BIOS setting? This is necessary.

If you did you could try a Slint installer, see http://slint.fr/installers and instructions in http://slint.fr/installer.html, either on a CD or an USB stick.

@business_kid: IIRC UEFI was enabled, otherwise the OP wouldn't have been greeted by grub.
