Hi,
This is my first post, as I'm new here.
I'm having a problem that I see all over this forum, although it doesn't look like anyone ever gets a real solution.
I'm currently in the process of installing Slackware 11.0. Lets begin, so no questions arise:
1. SATA 250GB WD HDD, IDE Sony DRU-830A DVD Drive. My motherboard only has one IDE Channel, and DVD drive on it is set as master.
2. Burned DVD ISO, verified MD5 hash.
3. Boots from DVD fine.
4. Partitions created just fine.
5. DVD Drive detects, reads, and burns just fine in Win XP Pro. Also, drive is detected as being Device 0 (Master) on IDE 0 (first IDE Channel)
6. When setup gets to the Source section, DVD drive is not detected, thus, install cannot continue.
Troubleshooting I've tried so far:
---
Tried kernels:
1. bare.i - no DVD drive, or SATA support.
2. sata.i - no DVD drive, HDD works fine.
3. test26.s - no DVD Drive, HDD works fine.
4. huge26.s - no DVD Drive, HDD works fine.
---
Also, I've tried each of the following kernel parameters for each kernel:
1. hda=cdrom
2. hdb=cdrom
3. hdc=cdrom
4. hda=ide-cd
5. hdb=ide-cd
6. hdc=ide-cd
7. hda=ide-scsi
8. hdb=ide-scsi
9. hdc=ide-scsi
---
With each kernel, dmesg is no help, shows nothing about a DVD drive. Also, "ls -l /dev" shows no linked devices. "ls -l /proc/ide" shows: "drivers".
"lsmod" Shows no entries.
I've tried setting my SATA HDD to Legacy mode in BIOS, thus making it appear as an IDE drive, still no DVD drive.
A common solution I've seen various places, is to use the 2.4.x kernel (bare.i), which worked for most people, then just upgrade to 2.6.x. The problem with doing that (see above) is that my HDD is SATA, thus bare.i will not work.
Can anyone help me out here? I've racked my brain and searched this site, and google for hours, still no solid solution.
EDIT: Just thought: "lspci -vv" doesn't work, as system is not installed.
ANOTHER EDIT: Just checked the HCL at
http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/ and didn't see the DRU-830A on it, however, several other DRU models (800, 710, 700) seem to work, making it not sound very much like a hardware compatibility problem..
