Slackware 10.1 install just exits.

I am trying to do a Slackware 10.1 install. When I try to
select what I want to install, a message flashes up on the bottom
of the screen (too fast to read) and then it just goes back to
the main menu.

I have seen this kind of thing in previous installs. It displays
some kind of message but I can't read it. I forget how I eventually
got it to work before.

I have also had cases during past installs where I would select my
packages to install and then it would immediately put up a message
saying installation was complete and to reboot. That time it also
was flashing up error(?) messages too quick to read.

I am trying to do an install from a hard disk partition containing all
of the Slackware packages. I am using the bare.i floppy and the 2
install root floppies.

Any ideas what is going on and how can I read these error messages?

Did you mount the directory where the packages are?

Yes.

I start up "setup"
Set up swap partition.
Set up the targets
Set the source media (from pre-mounted ...
before starting I created a mount point /slack and
mounted my sources there)
Go on to select packages to install...
something flashes at the bottom of the screen
(2-3 lines) too fast to read, and then the menu
re-appears.

I probably could figure out the problem if I could
just read the messages.

I have noticed for years that Slackware will tend to
flash things on the screen during the install. I guess
most of these messages can be ignored.. but some
can't.
