I just got slack and am trying to install it on my Dell DImension 4550, which i stripped of the original hdd and ram and replaced with a brand new blank one. I booted with slack cd 1, set up my partitions and tried to point to a source media, but it keeps giving me the error that it can't detect a slackware installation disc in the drive. The thing i dont understand is, why is it booting when it can't detect the installation disc. I tested the disc on another computer and it installed fine. I am positive it is not my cd drive because i switched it with 2 other ones and it gives me the same error. Also, I get the same error with other distros such as mandrake and fedora. If you could give me some advice it would really help. THx
It maybe an issue with the actual media/disc being used, some are more readable by cdrom drives than others. You stated the disc worked fine in another computer but failed on a couple of others. Try to avoid using re-writable media, also try another make of cd and see if that resolves the problem.
Also, if you have two drives you might try booting from the other or, if one, switching its cable. Sometimes things like hdc more than hdd, for instance, though you probably are trying to boot from hdc. Just a possibility.
ill try burning it on to a different cd, and i dont have both cdrom drives hooked up at the same time, i swapped them out and used them one at a time to avoid trouble
