Slack 12 install route with CD's

At the moment, I can only grab the CD ISO's for slackware 12. I'm thinking of installing this on a new PC (alongside MS Vista) that I might buy in the next few weeks. I noticed that there are still 6 images to download.

(The last slack distro I installed for my current PC is 9.1)

Last time, I installed slack using CD's 1 and 2. I got most of the packages I needed to start with from those 2 CD's. If I remember correctly, this basically gave me 2 window managers (icewm and WindowMaker), gcc, X, some gnome libs, all the internet tools (mostly command line), and a few programs, like GiMP, nedit, and gqview. I put the rest together from various places, in source code form (Mplayer, etc.), or with available binaries (like the Firefox browser).

In any case, is it still possible for me to use CD's 1 and 2 for a minimal X based install? I might actually consider using the Gnome desktop this time, as the new PC should have more than enough processing and graphics power for it. I'm considering that too, as some of the DVD authoring packages I'm looking at for Linux specifically require the Gnome desktop, and not just the libs.

Yes, you only really need the first two CDs. #3 contains KDE internationalisation stuff and /extra and the others contain source code, the Slackware book and some other things. Be aware that Slackware no longer ships with GNOME (as of version 10.2, IIRC), so if you want a GNOME desktop, you'll have to look into GWARE, GNOME SlackBuild (I believe this is also known as Freerock), Dropline GNOME or obviously building it yourself.

Hi,
Not sure what mirror you are looking at. All you have to do is download enough to make a bootable CD with the A packages. After that you can download whatever you feel like to a usb stick and carry on installing from that. This is if both your old and new computers have usb. Put more on the CD if you like because the A series will not take much of the CDROM.
Gnome has not been included in recent Slackware releases.
Living in Sweden I use the local Swedish University Mirror.

Thanks for the info, guys.

I'll be downloading the ISO's from the U.S. servers.

It looks like I may use GSB, if I choose to use Gnome at all. As it states in the FAQ, it doesn't support PAM (pluggable authentication modules), which I'm fine with. That would break kernel builds for me, anyway, and could be a big mess with a lot of the programs I use. This is one of the reasons I chose to use slack in the first place, it seemed to be a better designed Linux distro overall, and as far as I can tell, still is.

Not sure about the X issue... does Slackware use the X.org servers, or is it still Xfree? I'm only asking, because the new PC I'm putting slack 12 on will use an integrated GeForce 6 series chipset for the video. Nvidia seems to have solved some driver problems with the recent X.org builds. Or would I be better off with the X build that slack 12 ships with?

Thanks again for any help.

Hi,

You could try the 'lmo-installer.0.2.iso' to do a ftp install on your new boxen. Look at this LQ post.
