Slackware newbie here... hope someone can help!

I downloaded ISOs for CD1 and CD2 on BitTorrent; The first CD ISO was fine, installed okay, etc. Then I got to the second CD and it doesn't seem to work. With a little investigating, I found that the second CD's files are all in caps and truncated to 8 characters, ie the root directories are SLACKWAR, ISOLINUX, etc. I'm assuming this is why its not working. Then I downloaded the ISO from another source and found the same thing. Are the filenames correct and am I doing something wrong, or are these bad ISOs? Thanks in advance.

I would guess that these are bad ISOs. In Linux you can get the file names changed to DOS style file names if you do not have Joliet file extensions enabled. I don't know what operating system the CDs were created on but my guess is that somebody screwed up and did not turn on the Joliet file extension support in their OS.

You can also have the problem when reading CDs if you do not have Joliet file extensions in your system. In that case the file names are OK on the CD but only the DOS version of the file names can be read by your system. Since the first CD displayed OK then you have Joliet file extemsions set up OK. However you can turn the Joliet file extensions off when you mount the CD. Did you use nojoliet when you mounted the CDs? See:

I burned both ISO's on a WinXP machine with Nero and I'm certain the configuration was the same for each. I also checked the MD5 checksum for disk 2 and it was correct. I know my Fedora Core 1 CDs work fine, but I really wanted to give Slackware a shot.

Downloaded a third time and resolved. Not sure why but it doesn't matter at this point!

2nd cd is all KDE stuff anyway, you could prolly just install it later right? or use enlightenment
