Linux is simply a very small program called a kernel.

What you want is a DISTRIBUTION of GNU/Linux
(and there are several, if not hundreds, available to choose from)
The GNU part is most of what you see, the linux part makes it all work
I suggest you first download knoppix [kde] or gnoppix [gnome]

If you are ready to install GNU/Linux then I suggest you take a look at these distros

I'm partial to gentoo myself, but as a new user it would take perhaps weeks to learn enough to install it correctly. Vidalinux is gentoo except it uses the same installer as Fedora - so you can get up and at 'em in just a few minutes
