I have a new Slackware 11 installation. I am setting it up as a LAMP server. The boot dialog shows the mysql server start and then stop. Why? How do I fix this.
I installed it as part of the installtion process.
ps -ef shows cups, rpc, sshd, inted, sendmail, and httpd all running
I just assumed that mysql would work the same way as I did nothing to get these other servers to start other than select them as part of the installation questions, mysql was one of those questions as well.
Ok... all I can surmise then is that you have some form of invalid installation. This is what usually (in my limited experience) causes a MySQL instance of not being able to start up.
I installed my MySQL manually (even though I also selected it to be installed as part of my Fedora Core 6 install) and I have no problems with it. But there are certain things (detailing in a MySQL package's INSTALL.TXT file) that must be done before it will run - I guess that your automatic installation didn't do these steps...
I'd advise you in that case to get a MySQL "standard" install / binary package, unpack it and install it manually. That way it is virtually certain it will work first time.
