minimal server install

Hi there folks.

I have been reading around to find some input on a minimalistic servertype install. I have played around with it for a while removing packages here and there and adding some again when things stop working.
However, I don`t really feel that i am getting anywhere, i am kind of stuck, and maybe someone have some pointers on what they have done themselves.

Server usage is a virtual hosting box running web, mail, ftp, dns for a fairly short list of domains. (It is running now, but not that well)
The hardware is typical PC, IDE/SATA drives in raid1, Intel chipset with built in everything, an intel P4 3G hz cpu.

Questions:
-does anyone have a package list they could offer?
-where can i find a script to duplicate the package list in the setup once it is completed (for future installs)?
-how little can one include to get some graphic session running from time to time?

Thanks for any hints!

The general answer over the years to this question has been that you need "Disk Sets" A and N. Of course adding a window manager is going to require at minimum X and and some XAP which sort of defeats your minimum install. Is there a reason you need a GUI on the server?

Once you find a package set that works for you you can create new tagfiles to install it on any other machine.
