Kernel panic on boot from DVD

Alright then.......

I had Slack 9.0 installed with multi-boot of XP Pro. (lilo is on the floppy)

When all of a sudden..

I try to boot up and BOOM!!!!

<0> Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!
In idle task - not syncing
<6> Keyboard: unknown scan code e0 7a

In addition the Caps lock and the Scroll lock LED's flash in sync. and everything is locked solid.

I attempted to boot off the DVD that came with Linux Format Mag and the same error occurs when the kernel unpacks from the CD.

I have replaced the RAM (512 DDR) in a P4 1.6a and also blown all the ext3 and swap partitions for a reinstall.

An OS independant scan of the drives and hardware show everything is working fine.

I did go into the bios and make sure that the memory speeds matched the actual and switched everyting that was set to "auto" to a manual config and still nada

Now I am at a point where I can't even reinstall....this blows..
Any hints would be very helpful
