Is it possible to install Slackware on a Virtualbox?

..And has anyone here ever tried it? If so, did you have any issues with it? Is there any advice on installing it on a Virtualbox that you would give me?

Hi and welcome to LQ.

For testing purposes, I have done it quite a few times. It works fine. I can't think of any specific advice.

Thanks. I wanted to try it out before installing it on one of my old desktops.

I have done it loads of times. No specific advice, just proceed like a normal Slackware install.

Yep, works fine. I used to run "production" stuff at home on virtualbox guests, if I ever wanted to expose a box to the outside works I'd do it under virtualbox.

For almost any user, a virtual machine is just as easy and in some cases more easy to do.

You don't have to worry about your host's hardware as much since almost every distro has support for a vm.

Many sites also offer pre made vm appliances where you simply download, click and run.

There are a few minor issues running any version Linux in VirtualBox. Depending on your hardware and host OS you might not be able to get 3D graphic acceleration to work. For example, some KDE desktop effects may not work, or may be very slow. VirtualBox may have problems with "gpm" and mouse cursor positioning when trying to copy and paste text on a Linux virtual console terminal. Make sure that you have the correct kernel headers installed before you build the VirtualBox guest additions. Slackware should install the correct kernel headers, so you only need to be careful if you build your own kernel and don't build the guest additions against the kernel you are booting.

For Slackware, I use the generic Linux guest additions for VirtualBox rather than the ones for a specific Linux distro.
