installing to an HP Mini 311

The mini came with Windows 7. Would like to keep a small partition for that and do a dual boot. Shrank the W7 partition to 50 gigs, leaving 170 gigs for slack. Have burned the iso several times with no issues in the burning, verified the burn. Did this in slack ( in my main system) and in W7. On the Mini, there is no ineternal dvd drive, it uses a usb drive.
When trying to boot from the slack iso (any of the several that I made do the same thing) I get the boot prompt. Hitting return it gets about half-way through the .......... section then hangs. Then the following message comes up:
Disk error 80, AX=42DE, drive 90

Things booted fine from gparted-live which was burned on the usb dvd-drive.

I'm lost. Should I go to the usb-stick boot or have I missed something?

Not having slack on the Mini is starting to give me hives.

I would just go with USB boot. Not much reason to cling to optical when USB booting is supported. It is the 21st century, after all.

Is there any reason that I can't create the bootable usb stick and then copy the full installation setup to it?

Using unetbootin, I have written the full iso to an 8 gig usb drive. I can boot and run setup but at the select your source media step, I am stuck. How do I tell setup to find the usb drive?

The moral of the story is slow down and think. Once I did that I realized that with one hard disk, anything else would be sdb. Mounted that and voila it works.
