Installing to an external usb hdd

So I am trying to install slack 11 on an external usb harddrive. My pc is able to boot from a usb device, so I think I'm okay there. I can't figure out what device to partition with cfdisk. /dev/? Any help is greatly appreciated.

/dev/sda would be the device, assuming that you do NOT have a SATA hdd in your PC (if you did, then the device you are looking for would be /dev/sdb).
