Installation on a Dell Poweredge 1850
 

I'm attempting to install Slackware 10.1 to a Dell Poweredge 1850. When I get booted to the install CD, the system is unable to see the SCSI HDD. I do the following command:

But the system tells me it can open /dev/sda. I also notice that on bootup to the install CD I don't see any mention of the SCSI device being initialized. I have tried the scsi.s scsi2.s and scsi3.s kernels to no avail. Any ideas?

did you try the adaptec kernel?

Is it adaptec.s? I tried all the scsi kernels I could see. I don't know all the kernel options I have.

Post output of dmesg here, and then maybe someone can figure it out

That's ok, I decided to go with FC3 instead of Slack. I really wanted to use gentoo but gentoo would work on it either.

Just to answer this question for anyone else that might've found it, the Dell Poweredge 1850 uses an LSI Logic SCSI controller. Use the raid.s kernel when installing to detect your hard disks.

Hmmmm- I've tried all of the provided kernels off the Slack10 CD on a Poweredge 4400. raid.s and scsi2.s both allow fdisk/cfdisk to see the SCSI RAID5 array but WILL NOT detect the CDROM which runs off the onboard SCSI controller. Now scsi.s is the kernel that detctects the SCSI cdrom but NOT the SCSI RAID5 array. I think that I have to either (a)build a kernel based on either the raid.s or scsi2.s with support for the onboard SCSI driver fot the CDROM or (b)Install Suse. I'm also toynig whith the idea of connecting a seperate SCSI cable off the same card for the RAID array to the CDROM with a 50/68 pin adapter.

I ran into the same problem on a Dell PE 2400. Had to compile a special kernel with the CONFIG_MEGARIAD_LEGACY instead of CONFIG_MEGARAID_NEWGEN, plus an adaptec module - forget which.

I'll do some more searching around, but does anyone know which module to select for a 2.6 kernel that will boot the LSI RAID?

you can scan the test26s SW10.2 kernel(2.6.13) config file and the test26s SWcurrent kernel(2.6.14)at main slackware web page from Get Slack to any of the mirrors. kernel 2.6+ includes aacraid support look for enable CONFIG EXPERIMENTAL=y and CONFIG_SCSI_AACRAID={y,m}

All this time later, and I ended up using FreeBSD on the system HA.

those Config lines, where did u end up putting them.
I've just got hold of a 2400, and while the install goes ok, the reboot doesn't load lido. When the boot floppy is used, the machine goes into a kernel panic, unable to mount the Root Drive (sda1)
