installation help!
 

I recently installed Slackware 10. and the installation went smooth, but after installation compelted i restarted and it said it couldnt find a bootable device. Im new at linux but i want to learn, so far its been a rough start. Can anyone help me out?! Im using Slax right now.

Reboot and select proper boot device....

Im assuming that i missed a step in setting up the drive to be bootable. Anways, im kinda clueless at this point at what to do. Please help, im a nubbbbb and if this question is stupid can u please at least answer me or help!

Seems like you're MBR isn't working. Did you try reinstalling your bootloader?

i guess it would help if i red some manuals.
anyways, i think my problem is that i didnt make 2 partitions.. one for swap and one for linux. i'll update and try it out and i'll let u all know if it works

This first time I installed Slackware I jumped right in and didn't bother with partitioning the HD. It does help if one reads the instructions. To begin with, you will have to use either fdisk or cfdisk to partition your harddrive. /swap and / (root) it the only partions you'll need to start off with. Upon loading you CD and cranking up the PC you first step it to type fdisk /dev/hda. That is if you use fdisk to partition your HD. Can tell you all you need to know but go to this link and it will take you by the hand.

Hmmm... It could be a lilo problem. I had a problem with lilo when I installed last week... for some reason, lilo was trying to write to /dev/hdb/ for my MBR when it was actually at /dev/hda/ You also need to make sure to tell lilo which partition is bootable. The bootable partition should be set up with cfdisk before you install, though. You have the option of making a partition bootable with cfdisk. And without a swap partition, you might want to re-install. I've never actually tried an install without swap--but it seems like it should operate on physical memory alone. I wouldn't recommend it, though. Like alioop said, you should have a / and /swap partition, and the / partition should be tagged bootable. Also, do not skip the bootable floppy step--that's the only way I was able to boot into my system and repair lilo. If all this sounds too complicated, read some how-to's before you install. Before I installed slack, I had only used distributions that hold your hand through the entire installation process. It took some serious reading/research, but what I've learned from installing/configuring Slackware is invaluable. I never would have learned it any other way. It's definitely worth the effort.
