Install slack over RH9, but keep XP and GRUB

Currently I have grub dual booting WinXP (ntfs) and RH9.0. I would very much like to make a switch to Slack9.1 and I have the install disks.

I need to keep the WinXP OS untouched but replace RH with Slack.

1) When installing Slack will I be able to keep XP and still use the grub boot loader already installed?

2) If so, what will need to be done to change grub so that it sees my new slack OS ?

3) Where can I find the info showing me where slack is located on my harddrive (so i can config grub)?

I'm no Linux wiz yet, but I'm hoping Slackware will broaden my understanding

Thanks much!

1. Yes, just make sure to install slack on the partition you have RH on now, see step 3
2. Not much, most distros have 'vmlinuz' linking to the exact kernel so most of the time you will need to change very little.
3. In RH type as root type 'fdisk -l' and that should show you where everything is.

Also post the output of the 'fdisk -l' command and your grub.conf file which should be in /boot/grub

What information will be important to know when I go through with this? Thanks again

if you are no longer going to have Redhat on the system you might want to change your menu.lst file to somthing like this:

/boot/grub/menu.lst: <--- think menu.lst is the default config file in grub but can be change to anything such as grub.conf

default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,1)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Slackware
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz
title DOS
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1

Slack doesnt come with grub though so you will have to download it and install it yourself... or you could use lilo which comes with slack. I like grub better but they both do the samething.

Thanks skog. That helped and I've got it working now.

I like grub better too.

Thanks again!
