I have an ide CD-ROM, but it works with the adaptec.s kernel fine with Slackware 10.0. I remember, when i tried to install one of the Slackware 9.x versions, had similar problems with the ATAPI CD-ROM. I find Slackware 10.0 has less bugs and is overall better than the 9.x-th Slack. Probably Slackware 10.0 would be the right solution for you!

Haha. But my Slackware configuration is surely less system resource-consuming than your RedHat. I removed various unneeded features. I find redhat good for finding out if the system is fully compatible with linux, because RedHat has a realy good hardware detection and a wide compatibility. But these automatic features make the sistem bloaty. So as soon as I have found that the hardware works, I make an optimised Slackware system to get out the maximum speed i can. Though RedHat was my first os, I find making a custom fine tune rahter hard on RedHat compared to Slackware.

Good point Janka

As soon as i'll have a little time i'll download Slack 10. Maybe i'll come back for some advice about optimisation

Thank you for your answer
