Install appears to be stuck
 

This is my first time installing Slackware, and everything has gone smoothley up until now.
It appears as if the Install is stuck on the "links" package. It has done nothing for quite some time and I am unsure of what to do.
Any help would be great.

Okay, I just got something saying installpkg error #1.

"There was a fatal error attempting to install /var/log/mount/slackware/n/links-2/1pre18-i486-1.tgz. The package may be corrupt, the installation media may be bad, or something else has caused the package to be unable to read without error. You may hit enter to continue if you wish, but if this is an important required package, then your installation may not work as-is."

Now it appears to be stuck on that screen.

Well I restarted my computer and Lilo booted up, so I'll see what happends from here.

I started over from scratch, and Slackware is currently install packages. Hopefully it all goes through

Everything has gone perfectly up until the "Mozilla" package. Every single package after that has had the fatal error message.

I experienced similar problems with my second box. I never fully resolved the problem other than attributing the events to a flaky CD drive. The CD reads fine on my other box and I installed Slackware there. I've tried other CDs in that drive with similar results. Time for a new drive I guess.

In the end I resorted to tolerating the CD drive just long enough to get the basic packages installed. Thereafter I installed the remaining packages manually using installpkg. Takes longer, for sure, but not that difficult.

Currently I am trying to reinstall Slack on that second box using the ISO image and floppies. The floppies all work fine, but I have had no success getting setup to work with the ISO image.

Do you think it would be possible to install linux on 1 hardrive of a 2 hardrive computer?

Not sure which direction you are going with that question.

Lots of people install their OS on a second drive. There are some caveats to watch for and I think you'll find some discussions on that here at LQ.

However, in light of your original post, I suspect that like me, your CD drive is flaky. Once upon a time I installed a bare-bones version of GNU/Linux on an old 486 that had no CD drive at all. I temporarily removed the drive, installed the drive to a newer box using my removable hard drive bay, performed the installation to the second drive, and then returned the drive into the 486. Because I did not install any boot loader on that 486 drive, I initially had to boot with a floppy disk. Once booted I then could install the boot loader. Twas a lot of manual labor, but the process is doable to get things installed in a pinch. Of course, you need an additional box with a good CD drive.

i recently installed slackware as well and it took about 8 hours with my older computer nad there were several errors on non essential packages
so i think that may be the reason for hte problem
