For the past couple of days I've been reading about and trying to install slackware 10 on my system which has a sata drive.
I've downloaded BoneCrusher's iso, but it's not bootable. If I boot from the official Slack cd then switch to his cd and try to load the default kernel and/or the sata.i kernel it says "invalid or corrupt kernel image" and "could not find kernel image" respectivly.
I tried downloading the sata.i kernel and bootdisk from slackware-current. I merged them into a bootable slackware 10 cd, but when i try to load sata.i it says "could not find kernel image"
I've got a ASUS P4P800 Dlx with ICH5 and a Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 SATA drive.
Slackware 10.0 freeze during install with P4C800 deluxe and SATA HD
Hi everybody out there !
I just downloaded slack 10.0 CD and boot the first out of two.
The result is everything stop to run when kernel search for IDE HD as I haven't one plugged in my mobo : I have two Sata HD, a WD Raptor 37Gb and a Maxtor 80 Gb.
So what parameters I need to feed the kernel with ?
Which kernel to use : I have tried : scsi.s, adaptec.s, bare.i bareacpi.i and all result in the same freeze.
Thanks U very much for answers.
ps:
please note that I haven't find the answer in the slackware installation FAQ.

It's not a parameter that you need, it's a whole new kernel/bootdisk complied with sata support.
None of the kernels on the slackware 10 cd support sata.
You could try downloading this image. It has a sata.i kernel, but I can't get it to work...
Well i got my 160GIG SATA drive working for the 2.4.26 Kernel on my dell box that kept hanging during the install.
I believe the problem lies in the fact that you need the 2.6.7 Kernel that will support SATA out of the box.
Its kinda hard to recompile the kernel when you dont have a system to compile it on.
However, someone did have the time & decency to post a Slack v10.0 DISC 1 ISO image with 2.4.26 Kernel Patched specifically for SATA.
Since I was in the process of burning a D1, I made D2 (second cd) as well.
Just went over to windows machine, and re-made the 2nd cd but using the Kernel's directory from the new CD I downloaded. This was because during the install it will ask you which kernel you wish to use and the old cd didnt have the sata.i image.........you could just copy the bzImage as well, but i am going to have do this 4 more times.........its just easier to burn a 20cent cd.
Where to download this Slack 10 w/Sata Support?
At this nice and fast FTP, if someone would be so kind to make this a torrent and/or post it somewhere else as well.
just login anonymous @ ftp.readmore.biz
Download, Stick the Disc In, Boot & Install.
Once you get going, the HD's will be detected and mounted as SCSI (or at least mine did), /dev/sda for example.
I fully expect this is a problem that wont be around for long with Slack 10.1 on the horizon and you should recompile your kernel anyways to 2.6.7 found in the /testing dir on the cd. I can't be bothered to do that right now......3 more PC's to go.
I have downloaded a sample kernel what compiled with sata.i
It has a floppy.
When it booted,send a message that i must enter a root disk to floppy.I download 2 floppies whole named install.1 & install.2.
I install them on 2 floppies.
When i enter them,I don't get a error.system can be boot.
But it can't open my device.
I downloded from http://www.oltenia.ro/download/pub/d...lackware/sata/
Please guide me......

If I boot from the offical slack cd, insert yours and type sata.i at the boot: prompt it says something to the effect of "invalid boot image"
On the ISO I put together, when you load it, do you get a title screern at all? I think maybe your image is bad. (If the regular slack CD works for you then I know that is the problem. (And you can't run sata.i from normal CD (Even if you put in mine ) as the CD has boot options preloaded (as in what kernels can be picked...) so that is normal. well let me know.

in a word.. yes.
(Although your download was probably right! It is simply the burn you sound like you had trouble with.. Did you burn as an ISO or DATA CD? Hopefully an ISO under Nero/K3b or others.. Burning the ISO as a data CD is like just putting a giant data file on a CD.. An ISO is an image and has to be biurned as one.. You may want to take a look at this.
You should get a title screen similiar to the Slackware one.. only a couple minor changes...
Speaking on that subject I need to post a MD5 and SFV on the ftp site.. I will do that so you can check the image against that to make sure you got it right. (The MD5/SFV/GPG will also be included on the new sata image I am working on..)

I definatly burnt it as an image using Nero 6, just as I did with the offical Slack CDs and the various other Linux distros I've played with. The download should be finished in about 30mins, so I'll let you know what happens *crosses fingers*

What other distros, if any, are most like Slackware (file layout, tgz packages, etc). Most of my Linux experience and success has been with Slackware, so it's my favourite distro, but if I can't get it working with sata, I'll have to look at something else

You got it working apparently, but if you are still interested, the thing I learned the most from was LFS (Linux From Scratch), but if you are looking for .tgz pkg's etc, slackware/slack-clones(Slax/TheTao) is the only one that uses them like that.. (At least the only one I know of...)
