How do I mount my MS2K disk from Slackware ?

Here it is. I've downloaded all the Slack 11 kits onto my Win2k disk. I then added a second disk drive in my cab, created a boot and then root disk, booted off them and then
partitioned the new disk. I then went to mount the Win2k with the following:
mount /dev/hda1 /usr/dosc -t ntfs

and got the following error:

mount: unknown filesystem type 'ntfs'

How do I get passes this ? Any help would
be appreciated.

I do not have the CD's, but I do have an
older version 7 CD set. Would it be just as easy to install version 7 and then upgrade
from there ?

Help ....

advTHANKSance,

Paul

Apparently the install floppies do not support NTFS. I was not actually aware of that, but then I never really tried either.

You definitely wouldn't want to install Slackware 7 and then upgrade all the way to 11.

I am guessing you can't just burn the CDs? You could do a network install if you have another computer laying around. Just share out the disc images with NFS (which you can do with a Linux machine or a Windows machine with "Services for Unix" installed) and boot with the floppies you already have.

MS3FGX,

Thanks for your reply.

No, I have no CD burner, and no other machine. And as for
installing version 7, it dawned on me as soon as I sent my
post that the kits are still on a 'ntfs' file sys, and out
of reach no matter what version I have. Duh!!!

I suppose I could break down and buy the CD set some day,
but I was hoping to get Slacked as soon as I could. I haven't
used linux for some time now and I'm forgetting anything I
thought I knew about it.

Purhaps another reply will come by and get me there.... I'll
keep beating search engines in the mean time.

Thanks again,

Paul

What about an external USB HDD formated to FAT32? The install floppy should be able to read that.

Or you could even put a FAT32 partition on your existing HDD, drop the disk images there, and install that way.

If you can't make a partition, you could get a small HDD you might have laying around (~2 GB) and put that in as a third drive. So you would boot with the floppies, mount the small drive to get the files off, install Slackware to the secondary drive, and then remove the small third drive when done.

My work around ...

Well .... If'n anyone is still out there ...

I Have 2 hard drives. One is Win2000 (NTFS) and the other for
Slackware. I created 4 partitions on the Slack disk:
hdb1 (ext2)
hdb2 (swap)
hdb3 (ext2)
hdb4 (vfat).

I booted Win2000 and copied Slack some of the Slack sets
( including a and l ) onto what showed up as G drive.
I then booted off Slack boot/root disks. Logged on as root.
Mounted the hdb4 (G drive): mount -v -t /dev/hdb4 /kits.
I listed /kits and there were the sets.

I went into setup and prepared my partions and designated /kits as the
source. All the kits showed up and were selected. Then when I chose to
install them it came back with:

Before you can install software, complete the following tasks:
1. Select your source media.
2. Set up your target Linux partitions.
3. Se;ect which software catagories to install ......

Hmmmmmm ... I thought I did all that

I started setup over and when I got to view the source kits
only the 'a' set shoed up. I installed it and it almost immediately
came back and said It was successfull and I could now control Z
and boot Linux..... but of course I could not.

I am not sure what to do at this point.

Any takers ?

Paul

That is a problem that I have been seeing more and more posts about on the forums, but nobody really has an answer about why it happens.

It seems like the installer does not recognize the packages, so it just goes through in an instant and says it has installed everything, when it really has done nothing.

Are you sure you copied all of the files? There should be three files per package, the actual .tgz, a .txt, and a .tgz.asc.

I'm not 100% sure, but the installer might also want the files that are in the root of the /slackware directory (MANIFEST.bz2, FILE_LIST. etc).
