How do i install the 2.6.18 modules?

I am a complete n00b to linux and I'm trying to get my system up and running. Basically, I installed slackware using the test26.s kernel, i went into the /testing/packages/linux-2.6.18 and used installpkg option and installed all things available to me. Then I went into /etc/rc.d/ and updated rc.modules to point to rc.modules-2.6.18. Next I edited the rc.modules file and removed the # in front of the various USB devices as well as USB generic media.

I think i'm doing something wrong though because when I reboot and run lsmod i don't see any new modules being loaded up. LIke i said, i'm a newbie and despite all my searching, i can't find a simple site that just says "to get your linux working do the following steps 1-99"

My ultimate goal is to get my zd1211 usb wireless card to work so i can have internet. That's half the reason I'm on the 2.6.18 kernel to begin with. The other half is that it's the only kernel that supports my motherboard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, please assume I know nothing, because I really know nothing .

Thanks!!

Hi,

Welcome to Slackware!

First, you can look at my sig to get some good online reference.

The kernel will look at the device(s) to be sure that the device(s) is active.

Once you have booted your system. try to modprobe the device. Then check the lsmod.

What do mean by the;

what i meant was that I was running an intel 965 chipset and core2duo processor. The older kernel's didn't support my ide or sata chipsets so I went with 2.6.18 so that i could actually use my hdd's.

I will check those links in your sig and see how it goes. thanks!

Thumbs up

finally got it working. strange stuff, i ran the pkgtool and installed the modules first time around but only about 5 of them were starting. then i tried rebuilding the kernel then none of them were working. i did a fresh install, rebooted, and before going into KDE i ran the pkgtool and installed the 2.6.18 modules and this time it worked perfect.

Now i just need to figure out how to get an IP address with my wireless card and also how to mount USB flash drives!

Thanks for the help onebuck. those links in your sig are great!

usually, that's gonna be with dhcp ... so
Code:
dhclient
-or-
dhcpcd
But it depends on your wireless card and the drivers you use.
