how do I get slackware to find itself when installed on an sd card

ok alot of computers can boot from an sd-card
but the sd-card might be someplace other than /dev/sdb
so how do I tell the kernel to mount the media
that it booted from on /
it's a 16GB card so I have plenty of room without using
cramfs

probably use blkid to identify UUID of the sd-card then pass that to kernel

no it would be some kernel boot perimeter
or lilo option

where the boot media is could and will change from one boot to another

it will be at /dev/sdc when I install it
then when I pull out the install usb drive it will be
/dev/sdb

what I want is a sdcard live system that was never intended to be run from a dvd drive

usb drives are so large now that a normal install
can be done on them
the smallest usb drive I can find is 8GB

It is unclear to me if you get to see the greeting screen of the boot loader or not.

Is the boot loader on the SD card or elsewhere, like a hard disk or an USB stick?

Please give some more information to better understand your situation:
  • Where is the boot loader?
  • Can you see the greeting screen of LiLo or Grub?
If the boot loader is on the SD card (be it a boot sector or an EFI image) and you do not see the greeting screen, you should check that your computer's firmware is able to find a boot sector or an EFI System Partition on an SD card as on another media, like a CDROM or an USB stick or the network. Try to find this information in its menu, in its documentation if you have it, or searching the Internet.

If you can see the greeting screen that's a completely different issue. Then tell us more about your system: do you use grub or lilo, and what is your Slackware version and architecture (32-bit or 64-bit).

You need to use UUIDs in your bootloader (eg lilo or grub) config and your fstab. I wrote up a SlackWiki page on the process.

How to configure fstab and lilo.conf with persistent naming

haven't installed it yet

the boot loader will be on the MBR of the sdcard

lilo would be preferred but grub will also work
