grub/lilo problem: after update to "newkernel" unable to boot

I followed the excellent advice given in a tutorial on:

If you are thinking of building a newer kernel in Slackware 14.0, then look at this. http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:sla...kernelbuilding
All went well.
I have my new kernel, 3.8.1.
But it has not fixed my main problem.
