FGLRX issues with Slack 12.2 on Thinkpad

Hi Everyone!

I recently installed Slackware 12.2 and ran into some issues. Everything went well until 'startx.' I then realized that it was looking for the wrong video driver for my card (ATI Mobility Radeon X300), and then replaced the existing xorg.conf file with my old one, in which I had used

Driver "fglrx"

I should have known that this driver wouldn't have been installed by default (needless to say, I was still unable to start X).

I tried installing the slackBuild module and driver for fglrx for Slackware 12.1, however it errored out (I'm not very familiar with slackBuild files, so this could be user error)--should these work with 12.2, or no?

Anyway, if anyone has any knowledge regarding the fglrx driver for 12.2, or suggestions for getting this config working, I'd really appreciate it. I'm pretty anxious to get going in Slack 12.2.

Thanks very much in advance!

Mike

EDIT: I don't know what I was thinking but it doesn't look like this is in the correct forum...I don't want to double post....is there any way to move it?

The fglrx driver don't compile on Slackware 12.2 for now. This is why you only got the 12.1 version at slackbuilds.org, and this why you couldn't make a package of it. See this quote of slackbuild's changelog:
Code:
 system/fglrx-driver: Removed - this won't compile on 12.2. A newer release
probably will (according to feedback on the -users mail list), but we'll
wait for the maintainer to push an update.
system/fglrx-module: Removed - see above note in fglrx-driver. --rworkman
So my best advise for now is to use the "vesa" driver instead. At least you should be able to start X with it.

Only replace "fglrx" by "vesa", in xorg.conf, it *should* work.

If it still doesn't work, let us know which error messages (with EE at the beginning) you get after "startx". Or you can issue that command (as root):
Code:
tail --lines 100 /var/log/Xorg.0.log|grep EE
and send the output.

Hey, thanks a lot Didier, I got X to come up at least. I'll just have to wait for the fglrx driver to be released for 12.2.

Thanks again for the reply,
Mike

fglrx does indeed work with Slackware 12.2.
However only versions 8.11 or newer will build
against the kernel shipping with 12.2 (2.6.27.7).

this simple set of commands got my x1650 up and running
on Slackware 12.2
Code:
./ati-driver-installer-8-12-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Slackware/All
installpkg fglrx-*.tgz
aticonfig --initial --overlay-type=Xv --resolution=0,1024x768
modprobe fglrx
startx
