Creating A Customized Slackware Install CD

I would really like to be able to create an installation cd customized for my computer. I think I've figured out how to edit the packages I want installed. If I'm wrong, I'll ask for help. The problem that has me stumped is how to get my 2.6.11.9 kernel files into the Slackware install files.

What I'm trying to do is create a cd that wil install my customized 2.6.11.x kernel during installation, instead of installling the 2.4.29/30 kernel, then having to compile my own 2.6.11.x kernel afterwards.

If someone can tell me (or direct me to a site) that can instruct me on how to create my own customized Slackware installation cd, then I will be more than happy to post a HOW-TO so others can do the same.

I think I have the package part taken care of. I just haven't figured out how to get the neccessary kernel files made.

Any help appreciated. Many thanks.

It can be quiet an involved process and the exact steps you go through to do it would depend on your needs. It's been a while since I've done it and I can't remember everything I did off the top of my head, but I can tell you that unless you have a unique situation where it's the only way you can get Slackware installed or something, it's really not worth the trouble. You can accomplish the same thing after installing Slackware by just removing the 2.4.x series kernel and modules post install, which is a whole lot simplier. Anyway, is there something specific you're looking for help with or are you looking for some sort of guide through the entire process? If the later, then there isn't one to my knowledge. But basically, you'd need to compile your custom kernel, as well as any modules you need, and package them. Add those packages to the A folder on the CD image, and modify the tag file in the same folder to use them vs the 2.4.x series. Addtionally, if you want to boot too and work through the installation with your kernel, then you'd need to add it to the kernels in /kernels and also modify the isolinux.cfg to include that kernel or make it default if you want. If you require the use of kernel modules during the install, then you'd also have to modify the initrd.img image in the isolinux/ folder because the modules in it are for the 2.4.x kernel. So it can be complex especially if you want to use a modular kernel during the install.

What you said is pretty much what I thought I need to do. And you're right, it is a pretty involved process. I'm just trying to do it just to see if I can do it. Thanks for your help. I'll keep working in it and see what happens.

I think you should be able to at least custimize and build an ISO. Check out this site on how to make an iso http://www.backslider.net/current-howto.php
