cfdisk'in using slackware.. but no permission to write.. PLS HELP!

I am trying to install slackware on an empty harddrive. It is unpartitioned, so using slackware, i logged in as root and used cfdisk to create a partition. When i selected the partitions i wanted, i had to type "W" to write the current partition i wanted to create. But as soon as i type it, a message says "Open disk read-only - you have no permission to write."
If anyone knows how to fix this problem,(somehow allowing for me to give permission to write) it will be greatly appreciated. Help as soon as possible!
