Am on a broadband connection that has the necc ports passed thru to the machine. dont know where to go from here.

Do you mean you can't collect mail from the server? You probably want pop3ad for that.

Otherwise, is there a firewall on your server or in your broadband device (ADSL modem?) that could be getting in the way?

that is correct. I can get to it it by ftp and ssh and the web sites come p from anywhere. Is pop3ad something i need to get from the web?(ie not installed from the discs) Also a wierd one i forgot i was logged into a pine session with an account and the machine i am checking from (on my local network, 10.0.1.x) did recieve it, and removed it from the server. Will NOT do so if i am not logged into the account (counter to everything i thought i knew).
from what i have found so far, if it works with my private address it works from the web, or i can make it do so. for testing purposes i dial in so i can test it 'for real'.

as frustrating as this stuff can be it sure is fun!!

ok now i can get my other machines to connect and download mail. cant get them to send but i imagine that has something to do with the postfix now, I mean wasn't it created to make it harder for folks to send thru your server?!

well funny enough i had all that stuff workin. and i have now moved on to the mail side. i again am hosting 3 domains, all with valid dns entries at ISP(i happen to work there) all websites continue to work fine. using slackware 9.1
postfix 2.0.19
vm-pop3d 1.16
now i can get all relevant addreses to recieve from anywhere
i can get all relevant addresses to send from out side my home LAN
just CANNOT get the durn thing to allow pops from anywhere. I had a time when the machine was returning 'closed socket' when i could not get users to authenticate.

followed directions fairly explicitly from these sites
http://www.reedmedia.net/software/virtualmail-pop3d/
http://sonicresolutions.com/tech/how...x_vmpop3d.html

as of right now the only thing that does not work is i continually get the enter passwd message.

i dont even know what to say that i have already checked but any pointers would be great. olny reason i went with the vm-pop3d it was the first i found, am ready to move to about anything else if the implemptation actually works.

sorry so terse, but 2 days of smackin this around....well we all know thanks

answer to above edit inetd.conf to:
UW PICO(tm) 4.6 File: /etc/inetd.conf

# Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) server:
#pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/popa3d
pop3 stream tcp nowait vmail /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/local/sbin/vm-pop3d -u 200 --group mailman
works fine. now with the virtual users instead of tru login users i just enter the private ip of the server and all is well. Hope someone might get some use out of this.
