creating a package from source:

download the source code
do the stuff needed (generally like this):
Code:

./configure
make

(note : do not do make isntall)

then you do:
Code:

makepkg
and then there should be a new file (somename.tgz) in the directory wich you can installpkg

creating from rpm:

simple.. just use:
Code:

rpm2tgz packagename.rpm
and installpkg the resulting packagename.tgz

Check out http://linuxpackages.net, it has software packages already built from source that you can install on a Slackware box. I found packages for ethereal and clamav.
