boot:: huge26.s --> not working!

Hello! I'm new to this forum and i'd like you to try to help me some.
I'm from Brazil and then this post might have some typos!

My problem is when i will begin Slack 11 installation...
I put cd1 in and when appears the line 'boot:' i make the following procedure:

boot: huge26.s

It was supposed to install 2.6.17.13 kernel, but i don't see the kernel image select screen during installation (like in slack 10.2) and after all is done i reboot and the kernel installed is the 2.4.33.3 one! The same thing happens when i try with test26.s...

I've been trying to compile the kernel 2.6.18.1 from kernel.org but i'm not being very good on it!

Hope someone can help me with it

Thank you!

when your slackware is up and running with 2.4 kernel
As root;
go to testing/packages/linux-2.6.18/
in your Slackware cd/DVD.( I used a dVD so I am not sure on which CD is this folder. Search it.)

do pkgtool and install all the packages in there.
then do "lilo" 3-4 times just ti be sure. And restart. I think you will be all set then.

One addition: Beware installing the headers package. You should not substitute the package if you do not encounter any problems when compiling some newer drivers that might need them. Read the *.WARNING file in the kernel directory (the same is found in the extra/linux-2.6.17.13 folder).

antoniodourado,

Welcome to LQ and Slackware!

There is another necessary step to installing a 2.6 kernel with Slackware-11.0.

The first prompt is "boot:" where you enter huge26.s and that kernel is being used for the install. Later there is another prompt that asks which kernel you want to install, and there you *also* have to tell it huge26.s or it defaults to the 2.4.33.3 kernel as you have learned.

After that you'll need to boot your computer and it should show just before the login prompt:
Code:
Welcome to Linux 2.6.17.13 (tty1)
Then you should mount Slackware-11.0 CD2 and cd to it:
Code:
root@titus:~# mount /mnt/cdrom && /mnt/cdrom/
and then install the kernel modules and source:
Code:
root@titus:/mnt/cdrom# installpkg extra/linux-2.6.17.13/kernel-modules-2.6.17.13-i486-1.tgz
root@titus:/mnt/cdrom# installpkg extra/linux-2.6.17.13/kernel-source-2.6.17.13-noarch-1.tgz
and you're good to go.

I would read the kernel headers warning! Btw, The packages are on cd2 /testing/packages/linux-2.6.18/.

Why do you need to run 'lilo' 3-4 times? You could just;
Code:
lilo -v -t -b /dev/hda1         #run lilo test
lilo -v -b /dev/hda1            #ok then write /dev/hda1
                                #change /dev/hda1 to yours
The above 'lilo' will be absolute and write to device /dev/hda1, so you should set the device to yours.

BTW, LQ has a good spell checker!
