Bad Slack images

So I've been kicking around the idea of installing slackware for quite sometime now. I've even tried but every single slack13x64 and 86 distro I've dled is bad. When I burn out the DVD and have active@ burner(and many others on win system) verify disk it fails around 70% no matter what speed I've burned the disk at. While in the install of file system and file structure(Blue screen red progress bar) The system tells me right around mySQL install that there is a problem with the disk. So then after downloading 4 copies of each 64 and 86 I try pulling distro from FTP server placing it on a system in the network and installing via FTP server. To no avail the same things happens. What is wrong with this distro. I really don't want to have to pay for a copy but if I do have to in order to have a working copy of slack 13 I guess I will. I have emailed info for Slackware and have had no reply. I really wanna get my slack on before BOB comes back.

PC in question:
Asus A8VE-SE socket 939
Athlon64 3800+ x2
1GB mushkin blueline
EVGA Nvidia gts250
160Gb /ext3
5Gb /swap

I've always used ImgBurn on Windows, never had any trouble.

I'll try it out but if I keep having the same issue what do you think I should do? I really want to setup this system to fold on over Ubuntu. I'd really like to see if I get faster times than 50sec per frame off my GTS250.

I can't see it being anything wrong with the .isos, maybe one faulty one now and then - but not all. If it fails again with ImgBurn, then I've no idea what's wrong.

Judging from the specs of your PC, hard drive space can not be an issue here, so if the installation always fails at around the same spot it is either a bad ISO on that Internet mirror, or a bad download.
You can verify the integrity of your downloaded copy downloading its MD5SUM file and running:
Code:

md5sum --check slackware64-13.0-install-dvd.iso.md5
There is one thing however that bothers me about your description above. What "red progress bar" are you talking about? The Slackware installation does not use any progress bar while installing packages. What release of Slackware are you installing?

What is the URL of the ISO you are downloading?

BTW email sent to info[at]slackware.com will almost certainly never see a reply unless it is about Slackware bugs.

Make sure to check your .iso images with md5sum. At least then you'll know if it's the image or the burn that is causing you problems. I had problems with the .iso I downloaded for Slackware64. md5sum showed that it was a bad image file.

Luckily, in my case, the corruption was only to non-vital packages on the dvd, so all I had to do was download a few extra packages once I'd done. The image file is way too big to download a second time.

I thought he meant the red progress bar on whatever burning software being used.

Downloaded via .torr file on the iso. I've been trying to install Slackware 13x64 and yes there is a blue background with a red install bar. Boot the cd > Setup file system and shares(NTFS partitions) > Then you are given a choice of how you want to install Slackware 1 - 5 or 8 different ways of how to install:
1 from cd
2 from NSF
3 from FTP
4 ect
5 ect
and so on you get the point. Ok when pressing forward via the cd install as it goes through the disk installing what is needed for the system. During that time there is a blue background with a red progress bar that displays the percentage of the install. Using a second image I dled from some ftp server(I forget which one) I started by un-compressing the iso onto a user's root on my lan's FTP server. At which point I tried to proceed with an install via FTP. Again it failed around the same area.

The md5 program you speak of is it a windows or linux based program?

Fake ISO.
Use this.

EDIT: It seems you downloaded 64bit CD ISOs, which don't exist officially. For a Slackware64-13.0 install you need to download the whole DVD.

jkirchner 12-14-2009 07:58 AM

I know you are upset, but where did you get this torrent? Slackware install does not have a red progress bar during its install as Eric mentioned.

I would get your official Slackware64 iso torrent from Slackware.com. Then you know you've got the real thing.

Guys the link I used to download the ISO was directly off of Slackware's site. I'll try it again but I don't quite understand why I'm getting a different version.

Trying once again downloading both x86 and 64 distros from the slack site links. I've have a copy of md5sum now and will let you know what my finding are after I get the torrs finished.

x64 showing ok
x86 showing ok

I'll burn out again and try my luck.

brianL 12-15-2009 06:22 AM

Mmmm, stopped at 70% again, like your previous tries with other burning software. Could be a hardware fault?

AmbientFiction 12-15-2009 06:29 AM

Bah I sure hope my DL burner isn't going out on me. Everything else is right in that system.
