Using make flags on Raspberry pi 2

I'm trying to build packages on a Raspberry Pi 2. I mounted /tmp using tmpfs to speed things up. However, I'm noticing that packages are not honoring make -j4 during compilation. Only one core is being used. So my question is, does the Raspberry ignore these arguments by default?

Well, it looks like it works if I set it manually on the actual SlackBuild. I have it set as an alias on my .bashrc and I can see that it is loaded when I run the alias command. I'm using willy's scripts to build MATE. Upon more digging, it appears that this works as designed when using his shell script. My make alias is not honored. So, this is really not a problem with the Raspberry environment at all. Will go ahead and mark this as solved.
