Zipslack wont read files created in windows?
 

I have just installed zipslack off disc 4 in the slackware set, and used a boot disk to load it, but my problem is this:

I have read the FAQ and decided to install x, so i downloaded the files from the ftp site, and copied them into /usr/src/x in the linux directory, using copy and paste in windows.

When i re-booted i couldn't cd into my new x directory, but neither could i create a directory called x using makdir, as it said directory already exists!

But it does not show up with ls, nor do the files copied into an existing directory

Is copying the files the way i have the problem and is there a way around it, or do i have to use the cp command? and if i do, where do i copy them from? can zipslack read outside of the linux directory?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, this started out as a "quick" way to show somebody linux, its turned into a nightmare!!

I recently started experimenting with zipslack as well. I'm a true noob but you can give this a try - worked for me:

Put all the X .tgz's into a folder (from within windows).

Copy the entire folder to C:\. Actually sitting outside of your C:\linux folder.

Reboot into zipslack.

Then cd /. Then ls.

You will see a directory called DOS/.

cd DOS.

You will now see the folder where your X files are. ls into it then run installpkg *.tgz

In other words, leave your temporary X isntall directory outside of the linux directory.

I, unfortunately havn't gotten much farther than this. I've run xf86cfg, xfree86config, and xf86config but I still receive and error when trying to startx.

xterm: error while loading shared libraries: libutempter.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.

Then X shuts down.

Don't know if any of that will help but hopefully it will.

Not a problem. If you figure out the other problem, please post your fix. I'll do the same if I get it figured out.

[edit] Actually, it may be a better idea to try a different version of xfree86. The version you are installing must be from 9.1 or current, since packages from versions prior to that didn't use the utempter library.

Personally, I'd try adding the package that I listed above. It may or may not be the only thing you'll need to add, but it'd be easier than d/l'ing all of xfree86 for 9.0, and if it doesn't work, then it's simple enough to uninstall [/edit]

And your right, i took the packages from the 9.1 cd

The link I posted is just one of the Slackware mirrors. You can get it from any of the slack ftp sites, but since you have the 9.1 disk, just get it from the slackware/l/ directory.

Just use x from version 9.0, and it works!!!!

I still cant get gnome to work, but im working on it
